Practical guide: how to accustom your dog to dental spray

Accustoming your dog to oral care requires gradual steps and a positive approach. Short, consistent sessions help build trust and make the routine easier over time.

Step 1 – Positive association

Let your dog sniff the bottle and reward them immediately. Repeat several times to create a positive association.

Next, spray away from the dog to get them used to the sound, rewarding every calm reaction.

Goal: the spray becomes something positive.

Step 2 – Familiarity with the product

Apply a small amount to your finger and let the dog lick it. Alternatively, use it on a treat.

Then gently touch the outer lip and reward.

Goal: the dog accepts taste and contact.

Step 3 – Getting used to contact

Gently lift the lip for a few seconds and reward. Repeat on both sides, gradually increasing the duration.

Goal: the dog remains relaxed during manipulation.

Step 4 – Introducing the spray

Give a small spray towards the front teeth, not deeply. Reward immediately.

Then proceed laterally, always maintaining gentle movements.

Goal: accepting the spray without stress.

Step 5 – Complete routine

You can apply the spray directly or use it with a toothbrush. Start with a few movements and gradually increase.
